Get Foot ReflexologyWhat are the origins of Reflexology

Reflexology was practiced for many thousands of years in China , India and Egypt before being popularised and promoted in the West. Shortly after the turn of the last century, a Dr. William Fitzgerald introduced, into the USA, a fore runner of Reflexology he called Zone Therapy and he published, in 1917, his research and findings in a book of the same name. His own medical specialism was ENT (ear, nose, throat) and he discovered that by applying pressure on the tips of each finger, an anaesthetic affect could be induced in a patient thereby enabling Dr Fitzgerald to carry out localised, but not major, surgery without the use of an anaesthetic.

A couple of decades later, in the 1930s, a Eunice Ingham further advanced Dr Fitzgeralds work on Zone Therapy, producing a foot-body map and developing various finger, thumb and hand pressure techniques. Eunice Ingham was a physiotherapist and the term Reflexology came first into common use following his pioneering work.

Today, Reflexology has become a popular form of natural therapy. Indeed, a number of people with health related problems are today turning to alternative healing methods, oft-times to supplement prescribed medication; and many of these are tintroduced to Foot Reflexology.

Over 300 research studies have examined the effects of reflexology upon certain chronic health conditions adding to the wealth of information already known anecdotally.

What is Foot Reflexology and How Does Foot Reflexology Work

Foot Reflexology is a natural therapy that requires a pressure to be applied on specific areas of the foot. Eunice Ingham mapped zones in the foot that corresponded to every part of the body. The notion is that these different zones of the foot are associated with different organ systems and other parts in the body and, through the use of expert, knowledgeable and specialist pressure upon zthe ones of the foot, appropriate stimulation will reach these related organ systems, thus giving relief to the receiver.

When pressure is expertly applied in foot reflexology, levels of a persons tension are usually seen to reduce, but where in the body this occurs is depending on the associated Foot Zone being worked on.

Relieving a tension in specific parts of the body allows the blood and oxygen to flow freely to the targeted areas, bringing healing.

The technique is unique and, although there are perceived similarities, must not to be confused with foot massage. foot reflexology is a non-invasive and relatively simple procedure for patients.
